Why Vultures?
I am a sucker for the underdog. Vultures are dismissed, feared and even reviled due to the nature of their role in our ecology.
They are the cleaners. Carrion eaters. They do not kill. A healthy wake of vultures can strip a carcass to the bone in 45 minutes. Their highly acidic digestive system kills most anything and breaks the cycle of diseases and infections.
So important is their role in our ecology that old world vultures and new world vultures are not related. They evolved from separate families. The world needs them so much they were made twice.
There are 23 species of vulture worldwide and 14 of them are threatened or endangered.
My effort here is to shine a different light...to see their beauty...extol their virtues.
